Identification Strategy
A core empirical challenge is that unobserved factors may jointly determine bond complexity and market outcomes. The authors exploit panel variation in state-level revolving-door regulations — laws that restrict former public officials from taking employment at firms regulated by their former agencies for a “cool-off” period — as an instrument for bond complexity.
